The SP2 was a thorough update for 2002, using a stiffer, lighter frame and swingarm taken from the factory race bikes, larger throttle bodies, revised injection and ignition maps and reworked suspension. Claimed power rose slightly and weight dropped about 5 kg. That year Colin Edwards won a second World Superbike title on the RC51 and Nicky Hayden took the AMA Superbike crown.
